What Do These Devices Do?

Heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) and energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) draw fresh air into a building and pre-heat it or pre-cool it using the air already inside. This recovers the energy used by the heater or air conditioner and applies it to the incoming fresh air.

Imagine a hot summer day. An ERV draws in a current of fresh—but warm—air through an outdoor vent. At the same time, it draws cooler air from inside the house. The two currents of air pass through a heat exchanger, where the hot air loses heat to the cooler air. This is called counter-flow heat exchange. The indoor air is exhausted outside, and the outdoor air enters the home already cooled down. The ERV system has "recovered" the energy the AC used to cool the indoor air and used it on the incoming fresh air. In colder weather, the process works in reverse.

This Offers Some Terrific Benefits

Circulating fresh air through a house is difficult today because homes are sealed against the outside so they won’t lose or gain extra heat. An ERV or HRV system allows fresh air circulation without spoiling home energy efficiency. With these systems in place, it’s like having the windows thrown open to the outdoors—but without heat coming in or escaping. Not only do you have healthier indoor air, you can enjoy uninterrupted comfort and utility bills that don’t get out of control.

The Difference Between an ERV and HRV

Heat recovery and energy recovery ventilators work in almost the same way—with a few important differences. In an energy recovery ventilator, the counter-flow heat exchange permits moisture to move between the two currents as well as heat. This allows for indoor humidity control. A heat recovery ventilator doesn’t permit the movement of moisture between the air currents. The one that’s best for a particular home depends on different factors. It’s best to leave the choice to an HVAC professional.
